CREATIVITY #24 - Three Fun Ways to be more Creative!

NUMBER ONE:

DON'T STEP OUTSIDE THE BOX, STEP TO THE LEFT!

Sometimes when we're in the creative process we get so concerned with stepping outside of the box into something so brand-new and amazing that it can actually limit our creative flow and make us feel stuck.  Going for new, novel, never-been-done-before sometimes just doesn't work. Sometimes you just need to take an idea or concept and STEP TO THE LEFT to make it new and unique.

For example:

So you are stuck in the process of writing your play?

Keep the same characters and plot but set it in Spain or in the 1890's or set it in outer space! Just stepping to the left with a new setting or time period could bring your work to an exciting new place!

Or change the sex of the main character and see what happens! Or add a narrator and make your play self-aware and see what happens?

But take a STEP TO THE LEFT and watch your creativity soar!

NUMBER TWO:

KEEP YOUR GROUND

Often when are in the creative process,  we will throw away an idea because people say it's been done before. Never assume that your version of an idea that seems like it has been done before will turn out like the same old idea. You are friggin' unique! If you're passionate about an idea and in some strange way it seems like it has been done before trust you can make it your own and make it unique. GO FOR IT and see what happens! A passionate creative idea manifested  from your heart will never seem old, dated or done before!

NUMBER THREE: DARE TO BE SILLY!

Don't be so darn serious in your creative process! Sit down at the computer one day to write NAKED! Or wear a Gorilla suit! Take breaks from writing by drawing cartoons or watching cartoons! Make your computer your starship Enterprise and pretend you are William Shatner (or Chris Pine) while writing! Just be goofy and silly before, and during your writing sessions and see what happens!

Remember, creativity is not work, it's play!
