LIFE WITHOUT PAROLE

by

Warren Doody

“Life Without Parole” is an original stage play based on the real-life case studies of forty-two women incarcerated at the California Institution for Women at Chino for killing their abusive partners. The setting is a room in the prison where Helen Broker, 39, a woman serving fifteen years to life for the second-degree murder of her husband, is appearing before a parole board hearing committee to determine her suitability for parole. The hearing and the play re-visits the chain of events that landed Helen in prison: childhood experiences; early relationships; the primary relationship; the abuse; the act of homicide; the arrest; the judicial process; and her subsequent life in prison. This primary storyline is complemented by the presence of four additional women, also inmates, whose stories are characteristically similar, and as Helen’s hearing unfolds, and the various issues and stages of the story are revealed, the inmates respond with their own experiences and thoughts. The play is inspired by Dr. Elizabeth Leonard’s Convicted Survivors: The Imprisonment of Battered Women Who Kill. The play draws on the original transcripts and testimonies of the women involved.
